Generative surface design

The last few days I was playing around with generative surface design, e.g. mesh surfaces that can be described with mathematical formulas following certain parameters. Okay, sounds boring but it’s far from that. It’s mathematics condensed into form (sounds much better).

Anyway, after modeling such a surface I put it through its paces and finally it became a substantial part of this latest concept painting. Inclusive the modeling and everything it was a 4 hours job, something that wouldn’t have been possible without the intricate detail and variety I got from the initial mesh.

Math is not just numbers.

Inspired by Steambot’s great work I had to sit down immediately and do a new painting myself. The lure to create something fresh is just too strong.
This time I did a quick polygon model with basic lighting in 3d first and then used this as the base for a more sophisticated paintover including textures, atmosphere and the final mood and light situation.

Sunday, my I do have to run day

Good and creative day today. Went for a smooth 90 minutes run and did a new concept painting. It sometimes amazes me how the more interesting pieces are done in such a short time. This one took just over 3 hours. I love it when I’m in “the zone” and when things start flowing and just fit together in the end. It’s like watching yourself from the outside, letting go.

Yesterday I was thinking about Vehicle Designs and how I almost never really do them. So I started sketching and finally ended up with this tank painting which is not really a new concept but just an interesting thing to look at. In the spirit of Nick Pugh I will try to come up with something more mind-bending in the future.
And don’t ask me why the tank is called Sunshine Lady. It was kinda late already
