Today I was invited to attend the topping out ceremony of the German Pavilion for the Expo 2010. The topping out ceremony is a German tradition that celebrates the completion of the basic structure of a building.

Well, it’s really like this, when you’re suddenly surrounded by (other) two meters tall Europeans they are either Dutch or German. Well, in this case mostly German and so there was a nice and surprisingly big crowd present to marvel at the huge steel skeleton that is to be the German Pavilion and to enjoy German beer (of course) and food.

The only real drawback was the weather. A super hot and sticky, overly humid summer day in Shanghai that kept people flocking near the aircons in the food tents. I still don’t know how they want to handle this when the real Expo is up and people will have to queue for hours outside the main attractions.

Guess we’ll all find out soon enough

What is new is that I’ve started doing some fine concept paintings again, something that helps tremendously in keeping me sane in an insane country.

Here are some examples:

It usually takes something between 45 minutes and several hours to finish one of these babies.

While in Berlin I stumbled – purely by chance – upon this wonderful photograph by Andres Marroquin. Marroquin is a young photographer who has just graduated from the Ostkreuz school for photography and this photograph of a young girl (Sarnai) from Mongolia was part of the graduation exhibition in an old transformer station in Berlin Pankow.

I went to the exhibition and the original photograph thankfully turned out to be even more mesmerizing than the web preview. I then immediately called the artist and bought the print . And I’m very happy about it!

As a founder of not just one but already three different companies I know that these words are very, very true. Pace yourself, believe in yourself, do what you really want to do, stick to it, don’t listen to Mr. and Mrs. “You can’t” and again believe in yourself.

Everywhere friendly and relaxed people chatting for no other reason than that life is here to live
